I have always been a fan of getting out into the fresh air and countryside with my dog, Elf. It’s therapeutic, as well as a chance for my dog to get all the smells, run about and have a bark! Whether you have a dog to walk or not, it is amazing what a simple stroll can do for your wellbeing, 20 minutes or 2 hours, it’s all incredibly beneficial to your health.
During these weird and uncertain times, we have luckily still been able to leave our homes to take a walk and escape reality for a little while. The daily walk for me isn’t just about fitness and also for my dog to get his exercise, but it’s my opportunity to zone out, switch off and just be away from the world for a while. I feel like my walk is my little part of the day to have to myself with my dog, process any thoughts, clear any negative thoughts, explore, appreciate my surroundings and generally impact my day positively.
Exercise in general is like therapy for many and with the current situation having all our gyms closed, it can massively affect mental health and motivation. I have had a lot of questions on social media about how I have personally been staying positive during this lockdown and I can honestly say it is due to getting out with my dog once a day!
Some day’s motivation is at an all-time low, it can be a struggle and yes I’ve had days where the most I’ve walked is to the kitchen and back! It is completely okay to have those days, we need to remember to not be so tough on ourselves, we are human!
Tips for that feel good walk;
- An awesome playlist
- A dog if you have one (or borrow one!)
- Turning your phone into Do Not Disturb
- Your favourite surroundings – woodland, beach, park etc
- A comfy pair of shoes
- A super comfy pair of Not Just A Pretty Face gym leggings!
